Importing from Italy to Canada: FAQ
How is import duty calculated for goods shipped from Italy to Canada?
Duty is the tariff rate for the product's HS code multiplied by the dutiable value. Canada assesses ad valorem duty on the FOB (transaction) value: the price of the goods, without international freight and insurance. Import GST is then charged at 5% on value for duty + duty + excise. Enter your HS code or a product description above to get the exact rate for your goods.
What is the import GST rate in Canada?
The standard rate used by the calculator is 5% (GST), charged on value for duty + duty + excise.
Is there a de minimis threshold for imports into Canada?
Courier shipments from the United States or Mexico are free of duty up to CAD 150 and free of taxes up to CAD 40. Courier shipments from any other country are free of duty and taxes up to CAD 20. Above a threshold, duty or tax is charged on the entire value.
Is shipping cost included in the dutiable value in Canada?
No. Canada uses FOB valuation, so international freight and insurance are not part of the dutiable value. Check the tax base above: GST is charged on value for duty + duty + excise.
Are there customs fees on top of duty in Canada?
The calculator applies no ad valorem entry fees or statutory surcharges for Canada. Broker, carrier and storage charges are not included.
What currency are duties paid in for Canada?
Duties and import taxes in Canada are assessed in CAD. The calculator above accepts an invoice in USD or CAD and reports the result in the invoice currency you choose.
Do goods from Italy get a preferential duty rate in Canada?
Possibly. The LandedFees trade agreement database lists EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement as covering both Italy and Canada. A preferential rate applies only when the goods meet the agreement's rules of origin and you claim it with the required proof of origin.
