Importing from the United States to Mexico: FAQ
How is import duty calculated for goods shipped from the United States to Mexico?
Duty is the tariff rate for the product's HS code multiplied by the dutiable value. Mexico assesses ad valorem duty on the CIF value: the price of the goods plus the cost of international freight and insurance to the point of entry. Import VAT (IVA) is then charged at 16% on CIF + duty + DTA. Enter your HS code or a product description above to get the exact rate for your goods.
What is the import VAT rate in Mexico?
The standard rate used by the calculator is 16% (IVA), charged on CIF + duty + DTA.
Is there a de minimis threshold for imports into Mexico?
There is no de minimis threshold on file for Mexico. Duty and import taxes apply from the first unit of value.
Is shipping cost included in the dutiable value in Mexico?
Yes. Mexico uses CIF valuation, so international freight and insurance are added to the price of the goods before duty is calculated. Enter them in the shipping and insurance fields above.
Are there customs fees on top of duty in Mexico?
Yes. The calculator adds DTA (Derecho de Tramite Aduanero) at 0.8% of CIF.
What currency are duties paid in for Mexico?
Duties and import taxes in Mexico are assessed in MXN. The calculator above accepts an invoice in USD or MXN and reports the result in the invoice currency you choose.
Do goods from the United States get a preferential duty rate in Mexico?
Possibly. The LandedFees trade agreement database lists United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement as covering both the United States and Mexico. A preferential rate applies only when the goods meet the agreement's rules of origin and you claim it with the required proof of origin.
