Importing from Switzerland to the Netherlands: FAQ
How is import duty calculated for goods shipped from Switzerland to the Netherlands?
Duty is the tariff rate for the product's HS code multiplied by the dutiable value. The Netherlands assesses ad valorem duty on the CIF value: the price of the goods plus the cost of international freight and insurance to the point of entry. Import VAT (BTW) is then charged at 21% on CIF + duty. Enter your HS code or a product description above to get the exact rate for your goods.
What is the import VAT rate in the Netherlands?
The standard rate used by the calculator is 21% (BTW), charged on CIF + duty.
Is there a de minimis threshold for imports into the Netherlands?
Consignments up to EUR 150 no longer enter duty free. From 1 July 2026 until 1 July 2028 a temporary flat customs duty of EUR 3 applies per item (each distinct tariff classification) instead of the ad valorem rate. Import VAT is due from the first euro, either collected at sale under IOSS or charged at import.
Is shipping cost included in the dutiable value in the Netherlands?
Yes. The Netherlands uses CIF valuation, so international freight and insurance are added to the price of the goods before duty is calculated. Enter them in the shipping and insurance fields above.
Are there customs fees on top of duty in the Netherlands?
The calculator applies no ad valorem entry fees or statutory surcharges for the Netherlands. Broker, carrier and storage charges are not included.
What currency are duties paid in for the Netherlands?
Duties and import taxes in the Netherlands are assessed in EUR. The calculator above accepts an invoice in USD or EUR and reports the result in the invoice currency you choose.
Do goods from Switzerland get a preferential duty rate in the Netherlands?
No trade agreement covering both Switzerland and the Netherlands is on file in the LandedFees trade agreement database, so the calculator uses the standard (MFN) rate. Additional duties that depend on origin are applied where the tariff data has them.
