Importing from Australia to New Zealand: FAQ
How is import duty calculated for goods shipped from Australia to New Zealand?
Duty is the tariff rate for the product's HS code multiplied by the dutiable value. New Zealand assesses ad valorem duty on the CIF value: the price of the goods plus the cost of international freight and insurance to the point of entry. Import GST is then charged at 15% on CIF + duty. Enter your HS code or a product description above to get the exact rate for your goods.
What is the import GST rate in New Zealand?
The standard rate used by the calculator is 15% (GST), charged on CIF + duty.
Is there a de minimis threshold for imports into New Zealand?
Shipments valued at or below NZD 1,000 are exempt from customs duty. Import taxes are still charged below it: there is no import tax threshold.
Is shipping cost included in the dutiable value in New Zealand?
Yes. New Zealand uses CIF valuation, so international freight and insurance are added to the price of the goods before duty is calculated. Enter them in the shipping and insurance fields above.
Are there customs fees on top of duty in New Zealand?
The calculator applies no ad valorem entry fees or statutory surcharges for New Zealand. Broker, carrier and storage charges are not included.
What currency are duties paid in for New Zealand?
Duties and import taxes in New Zealand are assessed in NZD. The calculator above accepts an invoice in USD or NZD and reports the result in the invoice currency you choose.
Do goods from Australia get a preferential duty rate in New Zealand?
Possibly. The LandedFees trade agreement database lists ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA, Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership as covering both Australia and New Zealand. A preferential rate applies only when the goods meet the agreement's rules of origin and you claim it with the required proof of origin.
