Importing from Australia to the United States: FAQ
How is import duty calculated for goods shipped from Australia to the United States?
Duty is the tariff rate for the product's HS code multiplied by the dutiable value. The United States assesses ad valorem duty on the FOB (transaction) value: the price of the goods, without international freight and insurance. The calculator applies no import VAT or GST for the United States. Enter your HS code or a product description above to get the exact rate for your goods.
Is there import VAT or GST in the United States?
No. The United States has no federal VAT or GST on imports. The landed cost is the duty plus the federal entry fees listed on this page.
Is there a de minimis threshold for imports into the United States?
There is no de minimis. The USD 800 Section 321 exemption has been suspended for shipments from every country since 29 August 2025 (Executive Order 14324), so duty and fees apply from the first dollar.
Is shipping cost included in the dutiable value in the United States?
No. The United States uses FOB valuation, so international freight and insurance are not part of the dutiable value.
Are there customs fees on top of duty in the United States?
Yes. The calculator adds Merchandise Processing Fee at 0.3464% of customs value, minimum USD 34.58, maximum USD 670.86 per formal entry (FY2027, 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027) and Harbor Maintenance Fee at 0.125% of customs value on ocean shipments.
What currency are duties paid in for the United States?
Duties and import taxes in the United States are assessed in USD. The calculator above accepts an invoice in USD and reports the result in the invoice currency you choose.
Do goods from Australia get a preferential duty rate in the United States?
Possibly. The LandedFees trade agreement database lists US-Australia Free Trade Agreement as covering both Australia and the United States. A preferential rate applies only when the goods meet the agreement's rules of origin and you claim it with the required proof of origin.
