The unknown_hs_code error means the code you entered does not exist in the destination country's current tariff schedule. Almost always this is a formatting issue (wrong number of digits, wrong dots, a legacy code that expired) rather than a bug. Below is the fix ladder in order.

Every destination country validates against its own live tariff schedule, so a code that works for a US calculation may not work for an EU one and vice versa.

How to fix the error

1. Check digit count. US HTSUS is 10 digits. UK CDS is 10. EU CN is 8. Global HS-6 is 6. Trim or extend as needed.
2. Remove dots and spaces. The calculator accepts either 8471.30.00.00 or 8471300000; both resolve to the same code.
3. Verify against the current schedule. Some codes rotate in and out of the tariff annually. The /hts-code-lookup search is the current source of truth.
4. If the code was retired, find the successor via the search filter for retired codes; the successor is annotated in the result.
5. If nothing works, describe the product in the HS field. The semantic lookup fallback proposes three candidates that do exist in the current schedule.
6. Once you have a valid candidate, run the calculation again.

If the code is legitimately valid and the search cannot find it, we have an ingest gap. Contact support.

When the semantic fallback is the right answer

Semantic lookup is your fastest path when you have a product but not a code. Type the plain-English description and pick from the ranked candidates. All candidates the fallback returns are guaranteed to exist in the current schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator accept UN CPC or other classification systems

No. HS and its national extensions (HTSUS, CDS, CN, LIGIE, and so on) are the accepted systems. Convert first.

Why do some codes work in one country but not another

Countries extend HS-6 differently. A 10-digit HTSUS line will not resolve against an 8-digit EU CN. Truncate to the international HS-6 for cross-jurisdiction lookups.

Can I add my own code

No. The tariff schedule is authoritative. If we have an ingest gap on a legitimate code, contact support and we will fix on our side.

What if the semantic lookup does not find my product

Refine the description with more specifics (material, form factor, end use) and try again. If nothing suits, use the standalone /hts-code-lookup with keyword search.
