The HTS code lookup is a keyword-and-semantic search over the US HTSUS, the UK CDS, and the harmonised HS-6 for 220+ jurisdictions. Type a product description, a partial code, or a chapter number and get ranked candidates with chapter notes, ruling links, and current duty rates. Use it when you need to classify something and you want to see the surrounding tariff neighbourhood, not just one candidate.
Semantic search is the same engine that powers the calculator's inline HS field, but the standalone lookup adds keyword-only mode, chapter filters, and side-by-side comparison.
How to use HTS lookup
- Open /hts-code-lookup.
- Choose the jurisdiction: United States (HTSUS 10-digit), United Kingdom (CDS 10-digit), or Global (HS-6).
- Type a description in the search box. Two to eight words works best.
- Read the ranked candidates. Each carries a confidence score, the current duty rate for the jurisdiction, and a link to the chapter notes.
- Click any candidate to expand: chapter notes, related CROSS rulings (US only for now), and a side-by-side comparison against the next-best candidate.
- Copy the code back into your calculator, or click Calculate to jump straight into a calculation prefilled with the code.
Codes are updated on the same schedule as the underlying tariff schedule. US HTSUS revisions ingest within twenty-four hours of publication.
Filters
Filter by chapter (01 to 99), by HS-6 group, or by duty regime (Chapter 99 overlays, AD/CVD scope, USMCA preferential rate). Filters compose, so you can find every Chapter 84 code with an active Section 301 overlay in one query.
Comparing candidates
Two-way compare shows the two candidates side by side with chapter notes, GRI rule applicability, and current duty. Useful when GRI 3(b) essential-character analysis is on the table (Chapter 84 versus Chapter 85 is a classic example; see the chapter 84 vs 85 guide).
